Yosemite Needs Your Help

Return Hetch Hetchy Valley to the American people

Restore Hetch Hetchy needs your help.

Our mission is clear: to return the Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park to its natural splendor ─ while continuing to meet the water and power needs of all communities that depend on the Tuolumne River.

Leaders in San Francisco are unwilling, however, to consider restoration in spite of overwhelming evidence that it can be achieved with zero loss of water supply. Some even consider Hetch Hetchy Reservoir to be "San Francisco's birthright", even though no other city in the United States has ever been allowed to build a reservoir in a national park.

It's time to return Hetch Hetchy Valley to Yosemite National Park.

So Restore Hetch Hetchy has taken San Francisco to court. Last April, on John Muir's birthday, we filed a petition asserting that the operation of Hetch Hetchy Reservoir violates the California Constitution - specifically its mandate prohibiting any "unreasonable method of diversion".

We believe we have a strong case. But we need your continued support to make restoration a reality.

Tax-deductible contributions can be made online or by mail - Restore Hetchy Hetchy, PO Box 71502, Oakland, CA 94612.

We have carefully prepared our case. Simply put, we will present expert testimony that the value of a restored valley is far greater than the cost of making water system improvements necessary to capture every last drop of water downstream of Yosemite National Park.

Initially we are asking the court to rule that Hetch Hetchy Reservoir does indeed violate the California Constitution. Once such a ruling is in place, San Francisco will have the opportunity to implement fully the necessary system improvements to assure that not one drop of water supply is lost. While we are eager for restoration to begin, we believe the responsible approach is to make sure that water users are kept whole.

We look forward to the day when we are working alongside, not against, the City of San Francisco. For now, however, we must rely on the legal process as the forum in which to evaluate the extraordinary benefits that restoration will provide.

Please make a generous contribution today so Yosemite's Hetch Hetchy Valley can be restored to its natural splendor.

Thanks for your consideration,

Spreck Rosekrans, Executive Director
