"Hooray for Hetch Hetchy"

by Bill Oliver

Lyrics | MP3 Preview | Order CD

Imagine yourself in Hetch Hetchy
On a sunny day in June
Standing waist deep in grasses and flowers
As John Muir often stood!

So starts Restore Hetch Hetchy's new theme song, with music and lyrics by noted eco-folk-rock musician Bill Oliver. Bill says that John Muir was his co-author on this song - and you can tell! From the opening words in Muir's own prosaic prose, to Muir enthusiast and Restore Hetch Hetchy's Executive Director Ron Good's enthusiastic penultimate cry, "Hooray for Hetch Hetchy!" this song is infused with the spirit of John Muir. Small wonder, since Oliver is the author of two other John Muir-related songs, "Muir Power to You" and "Me and Stickeen."

But this is no paean to the old days: the song squarely confronts the future, with the totally reasonable belief that we can indeed restore Hetch Hetchy in our time, at a cost commensurate to other kinds of public works projects, which have far less lasting value compared to restoring the grandeur of Hetch Hetchy. Bill calls the listener to "Imagine a second Yosemite / One without all the cars / A treaty 'twixt humans and Nature /Restoring and healing the scars."

Come join our campaign to restore Yosemite's buried treasure, by playing our new theme song, "Hooray for Hetch Hetchy" for all your friends!
