Hetch Hetchy Renaissance

Original Pastel by James McGrew, 2001

Once the dam is removed, Hetch Hetchy will be reborn like the first brilliant rays of morning sunshine breaking through gray clouds and giving life to a new day. The bathtub ring will remain visible for decades but will gradually disappear as the valley is reborn with lush green vegetation and a multitude of organisms which once thrived in the open meadows, woodlands and vernal pools. Provided that the natural hydrologic and fire regimes are allowed to run their courses, and exotic species are kept at bay, Hetch Hetchy may some day be destined for a glorious sunrise like the one depicted here.

The references for the painting included a summer sunrise in 2000 with all the weather and lighting elements seen here. This was used in conjunction with a pre- reservoir topographic map and some historic photographs.
